What it does & how to use

A hairspring that's gummed up with old oil, grease or dirt is one of the most common reasons a vintage watch or pocket watch stops keeping time, or stops altogether — and very often, cleaning the hairspring on its own is enough to get it ticking again without a full movement service. This solution is formulated to dissolve that build-up so the coils can breathe and oscillate freely once more. It's suited to hobbyist and professional watch repairers alike.

• Access the hairspring: remove the balance assembly from the movement so the hairspring is free to work on.
• Apply the solution: using a fine brush or pithwood, work a small amount of solution gently through the coils.
• Loosen the debris: let the solution sit briefly so it can lift the oil, grease and grime from the spring.
• Dry off: allow the hairspring to dry fully before refitting.
• Reassemble and test: refit the balance and check the hairspring is oscillating freely and the watch is running.
