A spider key is a single winding key with several different sized square holes arranged around a central body, letting one key cover multiple clock winding arbor sizes instead of carrying a full set. This one gives you sizes 8, 10, 12 and 14, useful for anyone servicing or winding a range of older, larger clocks where the arbor size isn't known in advance.
- Measure the shaft: use a ruler or callipers across the winding arbor on the clock movement to find its diameter.
- Match the size: compare your measurement to the four sizes on the key — 8 (4.25mm), 10 (4.75mm), 12 (5.25mm) or 14 (5.75mm) — to find the closest fit.
- Fit the key: slide the matching hole fully onto the arbor so it seats square and doesn't slip.
- Wind carefully: turn steadily in the winding direction of the movement, stopping once you feel resistance at full wind.
