🔧 What it does & how to use
A truing caliper holds a balance wheel between two calipers so you can check it spins true, both flat (poise) and round (roundness), and make small corrections to the hairspring and balance arms accordingly. It's a core bench tool for anyone servicing or repairing mechanical watch movements, from hobbyist watchmakers to professional repairers.
- Mount the balance: place the balance wheel and staff between the two calipers so it can spin freely.
- Check flat truth: spin the balance and observe from above to see if the rim runs flat and level.
- Check round truth: view from the side to check the wheel runs concentric and doesn't wobble.
- Adjust as needed: gently correct the hairspring or balance arms to remove any wobble or rim run-out.
- Re-check: spin again after each adjustment until the balance runs true in both planes.
