🔧 What it does & how to use
A drawplate is used to reduce wire to a specific gauge and profile by pulling it through progressively smaller holes, work-hardening it in the process. This half-circle plate produces half-round wire, commonly used for ring shanks, wire wrapping and other jewellery-making work, and is suited to hobbyists and professional jewellers alike.
- Select a hole: Choose a hole slightly smaller than your current wire diameter.
- Anneal the wire: Soften the wire first if it has become work-hardened, to make drawing easier.
- Lubricate: Apply a drawing lubricant or wax to reduce friction and protect the plate.
- Secure the plate: Clamp the drawplate firmly in a vice or bench fixture.
- Draw the wire: Grip the tapered end of the wire with drawing pliers or tongs and pull it steadily through the chosen hole.
- Step down gradually: Move to progressively smaller holes, annealing between passes as needed, until the desired size and shape is reached.
