🔧 What it does & how to use
A micrometer gauge gives far more precise measurements than a standard ruler or vernier caliper, making it essential for watchmakers, clockmakers and jewellery makers who need to check tiny components such as glass thickness, wire gauge, movement parts or case dimensions to within fractions of a millimetre. It suits both hobbyists building up bench tools and professionals needing a reliable everyday gauge.
- Open the jaws: Turn the ratchet or thimble to wind the spindle back until there's enough gap to fit your part.
- Position the part: Place the item to be measured between the fixed anvil and the moving spindle.
- Close gently: Turn the thimble (or ratchet stop, if fitted) until the spindle just touches the part — avoid over-tightening, as this can crush delicate components or skew the reading.
- Lock if needed: Use the locking lever, if fitted, to hold the spindle in place so the part can be removed without losing the measurement.
- Read the scale: Take the reading from the main sleeve scale plus the thimble scale to get the measurement in millimetres.
- Store safely: Return the micrometer to its hard plastic box after use to protect the measuring faces from knocks and dust.
