A crab-style case back opener is the standard tool for removing screw-on watch case backs without marking or damaging the case. The adjustable jaws grip the notches cut into the back, while the interchangeable jaxa-style heads let one tool cope with a wide range of notch patterns and sizes — useful for hobbyists and repairers who work on mixed watch collections.

• Choose a head: fit the jaxa-style head whose prongs match the notches on the case back.
• Position the tool: centre it over the case back so the jaws sit squarely in the notches.
• Adjust the jaws: tighten the adjustment screw until the prongs engage firmly.
• Unscrew the back: turn the tool anti-clockwise to release the case back.
• Refit: reverse the process, turning clockwise to re-seat and tighten the back.
