WHY CALCIUM SILICATE?
The modern asbestos-free replacement for old-style soldering blocks. Calcium silicate gives you:
- High thermal insulation — heat stays in the work, not in your bench
- Reflective surface — bounces flame heat back into the join, helping solder flow
- Low shrinkage — board stays flat through repeat heat cycles, doesn't warp like cheap boards
- Pin-able — push T-pins straight in to hold rings, chains and findings while you solder
- No smoke or fumes — unlike charcoal blocks which slowly burn down and stain everything
- Long working life — one board lasts years with normal jewellery bench use
IDEAL FOR
- Jewellery soldering — silver, gold, brass, copper, gilding metal
- Silversmithing — chain repair, ring joins, bezel soldering
- Goldsmithing — fine work where flat support matters
- Annealing — softening sheet and wire for shaping
- Brazing — heavier work on copper, brass and steel
- Casting prep — small mould-making and lost-wax setup
- General torch work — any application requiring a flat, heat-stable, non-flammable work surface
HOW TO USE
Place the board on a heatproof bench surface (or a metal soldering tray). Position your work on the board, and pin or weight in place if needed. Apply flux and solder, then heat with a jeweller's torch. The board reflects heat back into the work, so solder flows quicker and you use less gas.
After use, let the board cool naturally — never quench a hot board with water as thermal shock can crack it.
