• Rub a sample: draw the item being tested firmly across the stone to leave a visible metal streak.
• Apply the acid: add a drop of the appropriate gold, silver or platinum testing acid to the streak.
• Read the reaction: watch how the streak reacts (colour change, fizzing, or no reaction) to judge the metal and approximate carat/purity.
• Wipe and reuse: clean the stone off between tests so it's ready for the next sample.
