🔧 What it does & how to use
Cordierite boards absorb and spread heat evenly rather than reflecting it back, making them a popular soldering surface for jewellers, silversmiths and watch and clock repairers working with a torch. The board protects the bench, holds heat around the joint for a cleaner solder flow, and can be reused job after job.
- Set up: Place the board on a stable, heat-safe area of the bench, clear of flammable materials.
- Position the work: Rest the item to be soldered on the board, using pins or a soldering block/third hand to hold pieces steady if needed.
- Apply flux: Flux the joint to help the solder flow cleanly.
- Solder: Heat the joint with a torch, directing heat onto the piece rather than the board, and feed in solder once the metal reaches temperature.
- Cool and clean: Allow the piece and board to cool naturally before handling, then brush away any flux residue from the board's surface ready for the next job.
