🔧 What it does & how to use
A divider is a bench tool for marking out, scribing lines and stepping off measurements on metal, wood or other workpieces. The two hardened points are set to a precise span using the thread adjustment nut, making it useful for jewellers, watchmakers, clockmakers and general metalworkers who need to transfer or repeat exact distances.
- Set the span: turn the thread adjustment nut until the two points sit at the distance you need, checking against a rule if precision is required.
- Scribe a line: hold one point firmly against your reference edge or mark, then draw the other point across the workpiece to score a clean line.
- Step off measurements: walk the divider along the workpiece, pivoting on alternate points, to mark off equal repeated distances.
- Mark circles or arcs: anchor one point as the centre and swing the other around to scribe a circle of the set radius.
