A spider key has a rotating internal mechanism with graduated notches, letting one key wind several different sizes of clock winding arbor. Handy for clock repairers or hobbyists who work on a range of movements without carrying a full set of fixed-size keys.
- Check the arbor: look at the size and shape of the winding square on your clock movement.
- Select the size: rotate the spider mechanism until the correct numbered notch is aligned.
- Fit the key: place it fully onto the winding square so it seats square and doesn't slip.
- Wind: turn steadily to wind the mainspring, stopping once you feel firm resistance.
- Repeat if needed: many clocks have two winding arbors (going and striking trains) – wind each in turn.
