🔧 What it does & how to use
A doming (dapping) block is a bench tool used by jewellers, silversmiths and hobbyists to form flat metal discs into smooth, rounded domes. This solid brass block has a graduated range of hemispherical indentations from 3mm up to 19mm, letting you shape domes of different sizes from the same tool, working with a matching dapping punch and a mallet or hammer.
- Choose your size: select the indentation closest to the finished dome size you need.
- Position the blank: place your cut and annealed metal disc over the chosen indentation.
- Select the punch: use a dapping punch that matches the curve of the indentation.
- Strike gradually: tap the punch with a mallet, working the metal down in stages rather than one heavy blow.
- Step up if needed: for deeper domes, move the disc to progressively smaller indentations, annealing between stages if the metal work-hardens.
- Finish: remove the domed piece and clean up the edges as required for your project.
