🔧 What it does & how to use

A vernier caliper lets you take precise external, internal and depth measurements on small components such as watch movements, cases, hands, crystals and clock parts — far more accurately than a standard ruler. It's a staple bench tool for both hobbyist repairers and professional watchmakers or clockmakers who need to check part sizes before fitting or ordering replacements.

• External measurement: Close the outer jaws around the part (e.g. a case diameter) until they sit snugly against both sides.
• Internal measurement: Open the smaller upper jaws inside a hole or recess (e.g. a movement housing) until they touch the edges.
• Depth measurement: Extend the depth rod from the end of the ruler down into a recess and read where it meets the base.
• Reading the scale: Note the whole and partial millimetre (or inch) reading on the main scale where the vernier's zero line sits, then find where a line on the vernier scale aligns exactly with a line on the main scale for the fine decimal reading.
• Lock and check: Tighten the locking screw if fitted to hold the reading steady while you take it off the part to note it down.
