🔧 What it does & how to use

A burnisher is a smooth, hardened hand tool used to polish and compress the surface of metal without removing any material, giving a bright, mirror-like shine. It's also used to smooth minor scratches, close small gaps around set stones, and tidy up edges on rings, bezels and mounts. Popular with jewellery makers, silversmiths, and watch and clock repairers for finishing work at the bench.

• Grip: Hold the burnisher like a pencil, with the smooth working tip angled against the metal surface.
• Pressure: Apply light, even pressure – burnishing works by compressing the metal, not cutting it.
• Motion: Draw the tool along the surface in smooth, repeated strokes, working in one direction for an even finish.
• Lubrication: A drop of burnishing fluid or watchmaker's oil can reduce drag and improve the shine on stubborn areas.
• Stone setting: For bezel or gypsy settings, use the tip to gently push and smooth the metal edge down over the stone.
• Finish: Wipe the piece clean with a soft cloth to reveal the polished result.
