A stepped round mandrel is a bench tool for shaping and sizing bangles and bracelets by hand, letting you form metal around a graduated series of round diameters rather than a single fixed size. It's used by jewellery makers and hobbyists working with wire, sheet or strip to bring a piece to a true round shape and a specific internal diameter.

• Mount it: secure the tang firmly in a bench vice or mandrel stand so the mandrel sits solid and won't rotate.
• Choose your step: pick the diameter step matching the bangle or bracelet size you're forming.
• Anneal if needed: soften work-hardened metal before shaping to reduce the risk of cracking.
• Form the piece: work the metal around the mandrel, hammering or pressing it down against the chosen step.
• Protect the finish: use a rawhide, nylon or wooden mallet rather than a metal hammer to avoid marking the workpiece.
• Remove the piece: slide the finished bangle off the wider end of the mandrel once shaped.
