🔧 What it does & how to use

Draw tongs are a hand tool used in wire drawing, gripping the leading end of a length of wire so it can be pulled through the holes of a draw plate to reduce its diameter and shape it to a required gauge or profile. The serrated jaws bite into the wire as tension is applied, stopping it slipping while you pull. This large 10" size gives extra leverage and a more comfortable hold for longer or tougher drawing sessions, suited to jewellers, silversmiths and other craft workers who draw their own wire.

• Prepare the wire: file or taper the end of the wire so it will pass through the chosen hole in the draw plate.
• Feed through: push the tapered end through the draw plate hole from the back.
• Grip with the tongs: clamp the serrated jaws firmly onto the protruding end of the wire.
• Pull steadily: draw the tongs away from the plate in a smooth, continuous motion to reduce the wire's diameter.
• Repeat through smaller holes: progress through successive draw plate holes until the wire reaches the desired gauge.
