🔧 What it does & how to use
A piercing saw is the jeweller's and metalworker's tool of choice for cutting fine, detailed shapes out of sheet metal, and is also handy for delicate work in wood or plastic. This adjustable-frame version suits both beginners and working jewellers, letting you match the frame length to the blade in use.
-
Set the frame: loosen the thumbscrews and adjust the frame to suit the length of blade being fitted.
-
Fit a blade: select a grade to suit the material thickness and detail of the cut, then clamp it into the frame with the teeth facing outward and downward.
-
Tension the blade: tighten the frame slightly beyond the blade's natural length so it sits taut, then secure the thumbscrews. A properly tensioned blade should give a clean, high-pitched ping when plucked.
-
Cut on the downstroke: support the workpiece on a bench pin and guide the saw gently up and down, letting the blade do the cutting on the pull stroke.
-
Change grades as needed: swap to a finer blade for delicate detail or thinner stock, and a coarser one for thicker material or faster cutting.
⚠️ Please check you've selected the right blade grade for your material — finer grades (4/0–1/0) suit thin sheet and intricate detail, while the heavier grades (1–2) are better for thicker stock.
