🔧 What it does & how to use

This is a traditional acid-testing stone, used by jewellers, pawnbrokers and hobbyists to check whether an item is genuine gold, silver or platinum, and to give an approximate indication of karat/fineness. The item is rubbed against the stone to leave a streak of metal, which is then compared using testing acids to see how it reacts.

• Prepare the stone: place it on a flat, stable surface.
• Make a streak: rub the piece of jewellery or scrap metal firmly across the stone to leave a visible mark.
• Apply acid: add a drop of the appropriate testing acid to the streak.
• Read the reaction: observe how quickly (or if) the streak dissolves to judge the metal type and approximate purity.
• Clean and store: wipe the stone clean after use and return it to the wood box for storage.
