These testing needles are used alongside a testing stone and the matching acid solutions to identify the karat of gold (and silver) by comparison — a standard method used by pawnbrokers, jewellers and hobbyists checking scrap or unmarked pieces before buying, selling or melting.

• Make a reference mark: rub the needle matching the karat you want to test against the testing stone to leave a streak.
• Make a test mark: rub the item being tested next to the reference streak, on the same stone.
• Apply acid: place a drop of the acid solution matching that karat over both streaks.
• Compare the reaction: if the test streak reacts the same as the reference streak, the item matches that karat; if it dissolves faster, try a lower karat needle and acid.
• Repeat as needed: work up or down through the needles (8k to 18k) or use the silver needle to narrow down the exact purity.
