Magnetism is a common cause of a mechanical watch running fast, erratically, or stopping altogether — often the mainspring, hairspring or other steel parts pick up magnetism from everyday contact with phones, speakers or magnetic clasps. This simple compass lets you check for the problem at the bench before you start any other diagnosis, and is a handy addition to any watchmaker's or hobbyist's toolbox. If magnetism is found, a demagnetiser tool is used afterwards to clear it.

• Set up: Place the compass on a flat, still surface away from other magnets, speakers or metal tools.
• Let it settle: Wait for the needle to come to rest pointing north.
• Test the watch: Slowly bring the watch or movement close to the compass.
• Read the result: If the needle swings or deflects, the watch or one of its parts is magnetised.
• Next step: If magnetism is confirmed, use a demagnetiser to correct it before reassembling or timing the watch.
