🔧 What it does & how to use
A drawplate lets jewellers and silversmiths reduce triangular-profile wire to a precise gauge by pulling it through a series of progressively smaller holes, work-hardening and shaping it as it goes. It's a staple bench tool for both hobby jewellery makers and professionals doing wirework, chain making or filigree.
- Anneal first: soften the wire with heat before drawing so it doesn't crack or snap.
- Choose a hole: pick one just smaller than the wire's current size — don't skip holes.
- Lubricate: coat the wire with a drawing compound or beeswax to reduce friction.
- Feed and grip: pass the tapered tip through the hole and grip it firmly with drawtongs or stout pliers.
- Draw through: pull the wire through the plate in one steady, even motion.
- Repeat and re-anneal: move to the next smaller hole, re-annealing periodically as the wire work-hardens with each pass.
We stock other drawplates in different hole shapes, along with a wide range of watch, clock and jewellery tools and parts — please see our shop for more.
