🔧 What it does & how to use
A drawplate is a hardened steel plate pierced with a graduated series of holes used to reduce and shape wire by pulling it through progressively smaller openings. This teardrop drawplate is used to form wire into a consistent teardrop cross-section, handy for jewellery makers creating decorative wire elements, settings, or components with a teardrop profile. Suitable for both hobbyist and professional bench use.
- Select a starting hole: choose a hole in the plate slightly smaller than the wire's current thickness.
- Lubricate the wire: apply a suitable drawing lubricant or wax to reduce friction and prevent binding.
- Feed the wire through: pass the tapered end of the wire through the chosen hole from the back of the plate.
- Grip and pull: secure the protruding end with draw tongs or pliers and pull the wire firmly and steadily through the hole.
- Work down the sizes: repeat through progressively smaller holes until the desired teardrop profile and thickness is reached, annealing the wire periodically if it becomes work-hardened.
