🔧 What it does & how to use

A drawplate is used to reduce the diameter of wire and draw it down to a precise, consistent gauge, essential for jewellery making, wire-wrapping and general metalwork crafts. It suits hobbyists and jewellers alike, letting you turn thicker stock wire into the exact thinner gauge your project needs, working progressively through the graduated holes on the front and rear faces.

• Choose your hole: Pick a hole just slightly smaller than the current wire diameter — never skip several sizes at once.
• Secure the plate: Clamp the drawplate firmly in a vice or bench holder so it can't shift while you pull.
• Feed the wire: Taper the end of the wire (file or hammer a point) so it can be started through the chosen hole.
• Grip and pull: Grasp the protruding end with drawtongs or pliers and pull the wire smoothly and firmly through the hole.
• Lubricate: Apply a wire-drawing lubricant or beeswax before each pull to ease the draw and protect both wire and plate.
• Repeat down in stages: Move to the next smaller hole and repeat until the wire reaches your target gauge, annealing the wire periodically if it becomes stiff.
