🔧 What it does & how to use

A drawplate is used by jewellers, silversmiths and wireworkers to reduce and shape wire by pulling it through progressively smaller holes. This oval plate produces wire with a consistent oval (rather than round) cross-section, useful for decorative wirework, chainmaking and bespoke findings. Suitable for hobbyists and professionals alike.

• Select a hole: Choose an oval hole slightly smaller than your wire's current cross-section.
• Lubricate: Apply a drawing lubricant or beeswax to the wire to reduce friction and prevent binding.
• Secure the plate: Clamp the drawplate firmly in a vice or bench holder.
• Draw the wire: Feed the tapered end of the wire through the chosen hole and pull it through with drawing tongs or pliers in one steady motion.
• Step down gradually: Move to progressively smaller oval holes, annealing the wire periodically as it work-hardens, until the desired size and shape is reached.
