🔧 What it does & how to use
A drawplate is used by jewellers, silversmiths and wireworkers to reduce and shape wire by pulling it through a series of progressively smaller holes. This hexagonal plate produces wire with a consistent six-sided profile, useful for decorative work, wire-wrapping, chainmaking and other craft applications. It suits both hobbyists and working jewellers who need to draw their own hexagonal-section wire rather than buy it pre-shaped.
- Anneal the wire: Soften the wire first so it draws smoothly without cracking.
- Choose a starting hole: Select a hexagonal hole close to the wire's current thickness.
- Feed the wire through: Taper the wire end so it can be gripped through the hole.
- Pull the wire through: Use drawing tongs or pliers to draw the wire firmly through the hole.
- Lubricate as needed: Apply wire-drawing lubricant to reduce friction and wear on the plate.
- Step down gradually: Move to progressively smaller holes, annealing again as required, until the desired size and hexagonal profile is reached.
