🔧 What it does & how to use
A drawplate is used to reduce the diameter of wire by pulling it through a series of progressively smaller round holes, work-hardening and sizing the wire as you go. It's a core tool for jewellery makers, wire-wrappers and hobbyists who need precise, consistent wire gauges that aren't always available ready-made.
- Anneal the wire: Soften the wire first so it draws smoothly without snapping.
- Taper the end: File or hammer the wire tip to a point so it feeds into the largest suitable hole.
- Secure the plate: Clamp the drawplate firmly in a vice or bench pin.
- Lubricate: Apply a drawing lubricant or wax to reduce friction and wear.
- Draw through: Grip the tapered end with drawing tongs or pliers and pull the wire steadily through the hole.
- Step down gradually: Move to the next smaller hole in sequence, re-annealing as needed, until the desired gauge is reached.
