🔧 What it does & how to use
A drawplate is used by jewellers, silversmiths and wireworkers to reduce wire down in diameter or to reshape round wire into square, triangle, half-round or oval profiles. Wire is pulled through progressively smaller holes until it reaches the required size and shape, work-hardening slightly as it goes. This plate's mix of 41 holes across four shapes makes it useful for producing decorative wire profiles for rings, wire-wrapping, chain-making and other bench jewellery work.
- Choose a hole: pick a hole close to but smaller than the wire's current thickness, in the shape you want to draw it into.
- Point the wire: taper or file the leading end of the wire so it can be gripped and started through the hole.
- Lubricate: apply a wire-drawing lubricant or beeswax to reduce friction and protect the plate.
- Draw through: clamp the pointed end in drawing tongs or pliers and pull the wire firmly through the hole.
- Step down gradually: repeat through the next smaller hole of the same shape, annealing the wire periodically if it becomes too hard to draw.
