🔧 What it does & how to use

A drawplate lets jewellers and wireworkers pull wire through a series of progressively smaller round holes to reduce its diameter, round it up evenly and work-harden it as it's drawn. It's a standard bench tool for anyone making their own jump rings, wire settings, chain or findings and wanting a precise, repeatable gauge rather than relying on pre-bought wire sizes.

• Anneal the wire: soften the wire first so it draws smoothly without snapping.
• Lubricate: coat the wire and the chosen hole with drawing wax or oil to reduce friction.
• Choose a hole: pick a hole just slightly smaller than the wire's current diameter.
• Feed and grip: push a short length of wire through the hole and grip the protruding end with draw tongs or strong pliers.
• Pull through: draw the wire firmly and steadily through the plate in one continuous pull.
• Step down gradually: repeat through each successively smaller hole, re-annealing the wire whenever it starts to feel hard or resistant, until you reach the gauge you need.
