🔧 What it does & how to use

A dapping (doming) block is used to shape flat metal discs into smooth, rounded domes — a staple tool for jewellers, silversmiths and hobbyist metalworkers making beads, cabochon settings, buttons and curved findings. The wooden body is gentler on soft metals than a steel block, reducing marking, and the graduated holes let you build up a dome gradually or dap to a specific curve size.

• Choose your hole: Select a hole close to the diameter you want your finished dome to be, working from the largest hole down to the smallest for a gradual, even curve.
• Seat the disc: Place your cut metal disc or blank over the chosen hole.
• Position the punch: Rest the matching dapping punch onto the disc, centred over the hole.
• Strike gently: Tap the punch with a mallet, working evenly around the disc as it starts to dome.
• Step down in size: Move the disc to progressively smaller holes, repeating the process, to deepen the dome without splitting or creasing the metal.
• Finish: Once the desired curve is reached, remove and clean up the piece as needed.
