🔧 What it does & how to use
This set is used to raise domes and hemispheres in flat sheet metal — a core technique in jewellery making, silversmithing and watch case work. Each punch has a polished spherical (ball) working end only; there are no flat-face or stamp punches in this set. The graduated sizing lets you work a piece up gradually from a shallow dome to a deep hemisphere, or select the punch that matches the recess you need. Used together with a doming/dapping block (sold separately), which provides the concave recesses the punches form the metal into.
- Choose the recess: Select a block recess close to the finished dome size you want.
- Seat the blank: Place your annealed sheet metal blank over the recess.
- Start with a larger punch: Position a punch a size or two larger than the recess and strike gently with a mallet to begin the dome.
- Step down in size: Work through progressively smaller punches, moving to matching or smaller recesses, to deepen and refine the dome without splitting the metal.
- Anneal as needed: Re-anneal the blank between stages if the metal starts to work-harden.
- Finish: Once the desired dome depth is reached, trim, clean up and finish the piece as required.
⚠️ Please check — the punches carry no size markings, so measure each ball diameter on receipt to confirm exact sizes before use. A doming/dapping block is not included and will need to be sourced separately.
