🔧 What it does & how to use
A winding key lets you wind the mainspring of a longcase or other old clock by turning the square winding arbor found in the clock face or movement. It's an essential bit of kit for anyone running an antique or reproduction clock without its original key.
- Measure first: check the size of the square winding arbor on your clock (in mm) before ordering.
- Choose the size: pick the key size, 0-13, that matches your arbor measurement.
- Fit the key: push the crank's square socket fully onto the winding arbor.
- Wind: turn the crank smoothly clockwise (or as the movement requires) to wind the mainspring.
- Stop at resistance: ease off once you feel firm resistance to avoid overwinding.
⚠️ Please check your clock's winding arbor size carefully before ordering, as these keys are sized individually from 0-13 and the wrong size won't grip the arbor properly.
