A hard oilstone is used to sharpen and hone the cutting edges of tools such as gravers, screwdrivers, chisels, scrapers and other bench or workshop blades. Its dense, fine abrasive surface removes metal steadily to restore a keen, even edge, making it a staple for watchmakers, engineers and general workshop use.

Prepare the stone: apply a few drops of light honing oil (or thin machine oil) to the working face to float away swarf and reduce clogging.

Position the tool: hold the blade or tip at the correct sharpening angle against the stone.

Stroke evenly: draw the edge across the stone in smooth, consistent strokes, working along the full length of the stone.

Flip and repeat: alternate sides evenly to keep the edge square and centred.

Clean after use: wipe off oil and metal residue so the stone stays effective for next time.
