A calico mop like this is a soft, multi-fold buffing wheel used for polishing and finishing metal — bringing up shine on jewellery, watch cases, buckles, cutlery and other small metal parts. It's a standard bench tool for both hobbyist jewellers and professional polishers, mounted on a buffing motor or bench grinder spindle and charged with a polishing compound to suit the metal and finish required.

• Mount the mop: fit the wheel onto a buffing motor, polishing lathe or bench grinder arbor suited to its centre bore.
• Charge the wheel: hold a bar of polishing compound (e.g. tripoli for cutting, rouge for finishing) lightly against the spinning mop to load it.
• Polish the piece: present the workpiece to the lower part of the wheel, moving it steadily so heat doesn't build up in one spot.
• Work in stages: use a coarser compound first to cut out scratches, then a finer one on a clean mop for a bright final finish.
• Clean off: wash the finished item to remove residual compound before use or display.
