🔧 What it does & how to use
An Arkansas oil stone is a natural, very hard sharpening stone used to put a fine, sharp edge on small hand tools such as screwdrivers, gravers, chisels and blades. It's a staple bench tool for watchmakers, clockmakers and jewellers who need to keep their cutting and driving tools razor-sharp for precise work.
-
Prepare the stone: apply a few drops of honing oil (or light machine oil) to the surface to float away metal particles and stop the stone clogging.
-
Position the tool: hold the blade or edge at the correct angle against the stone.
-
Hone: draw the edge across the stone in smooth, consistent strokes, working both faces evenly.
-
Check the edge: inspect regularly and continue until a fine, sharp edge is achieved.
-
Clean afterwards: wipe the stone clean of oil and metal residue after use and store dry.
