Shellac is a natural resin used as a heat-set adhesive for holding jewels in place — most commonly pallet stones on the pallet fork and roller jewels on the roller table. It's also handy for jewellery makers who need to temporarily hold a piece steady while setting stones, chasing or engraving. Once melted and cooled it forms a hard, stable joint that won't break down, yet can still be released or repositioned with fresh heat.

• Warm the part: gently heat the pallet, roller table or workpiece with a suitable heat source such as an alcohol lamp.
• Apply the shellac: touch a few flakes to the warmed area so they melt and flow into place.
• Seat the jewel or component: position it while the shellac is still molten.
• Let it cool: remove the heat and allow the shellac to harden fully — this gives the joint.
• Adjust if needed: reheat gently to soften the shellac and reposition the part, then let it cool again.
